Feeling like a healthy start to the day, Charlotte and I chose Kokako cafe this morning for brunch. It’s a NZ cafe and coffee brand that focuses on sustainability and natural, organic foods.
The cafe is located in a converted 1930’s Post Office on a corner in Grey Lynn. It was very lively when we arrived and the space isn’t huge, but they utilize it well with a breakfast bar, stools, and some shared tables too. Their coffee roastery is also on-site. It feels a bit like a factory lunchroom, with a mix of metal and wood seating, and a monochrome checkered floor. We liked the addition of fresh flowers on all the tables.
They do a range of gluten free, dairy free and vegetarian options, alongside other organic dishes. We both ordered smoothies which had a variety of wholesome ingredients and which came out in quaint jars. Mine included coconut water, almond milk and berries.
Charlotte ordered the breakfast bruschetta topped with a delicious black-olive oil, while I had the Moroccan chickpea burger with my choice of bread. I was still a little peckish afterwards, so had some gluten-free nut brownie and a fair-trade coffee (if it’s gluten-free it’s relatively healthy, right?).
Impressed by their focus on quality ingredients, flavoursome food and cleanliness, we’d definitely go back. Recommend it to people with special dietary needs too!
