Although it isn’t a cafe, we couldn’t help but be lured into Citizen Park yesterday for lunch. It is inspired by Southern California, and certainly oozes a summery vibe with its colourful outdoor courtyard and tasty, no-fuss menu.
The atmosphere is laid back, with great indoor-outdoor flow. A collection of patio chairs and tables, wooden picnic benches shaded by wide umbrellas, potted plants and chilled music, creates the perfect environment for a casual bite to eat.
The menu has American favourites alongside Mexican inspired options. We ordered some of the nachos and were impressed! They were smothered in a delicious spicy mince, topped with lashings of sour cream and guacamole. Our brother Alastair (the guest of honour for the day) had the classic Madison Citizen Dogg with sauerkraut and brown mustard on the side. He thought it was great. Laura chose the Vego burger made with moist falafel, humus and spicy yoghurt, while I had the Citizen Caesar salad with egg, roast chicken, anchovies and bacon. Aside from my bacon being a bit dry and too streaky, we had no complaints and thought the food was flavoursome and enjoyable – surprisingly not too greasy or heavy!
The service could have been more energetic and attentive, but regardless, we didn’t wait long for our food to arrive and our waters were topped up.
Citizen Park has been designed well, with a fun set-up we think is ideal for small or large groups for drinks and nibbles, or for lazy summer meals. Would easily visit again!
