Laura and I wanted somewhere casual for a bite to eat on the weekend and this little place came to mind, so we made a visit. L’Escabeau French Kitchen is a cafe on Richmond road and is run by the very friendly, and very French, Delphine and Guillaume. The highlight was definitely their somewhat-romantic sounding french conversations, and the smell of fresh, fried crepes drifting past us as we sat down to lunch.
We liked that you could just as easily take-away or sit at one of the outdoor tables to watch the day go by. The red and white colour scheme adds to the atmosphere, as do the interior walls decorated in cute paintings of cows and baguettes.
In addition to some savoury and sweet items in their cabinet, L’Escabeau allows you to DIY a sandwich, salad or savoury crepe with your choice of fillings. Laura opted for one of their chicken, pesto and mayo rolls ($8), while I crafted my own beef sandwich. To wash it all down, they serve fresh juices, smoothies and coffee.
And who can say no to fresh crepes? You can’t go wrong with their oozy Nutella and banana combo ($6.50), but the caramel and apple ($6.50) was also a good choice and not overly sweet. Délicieux!
A friendly and unfussy cafe with a point of difference! Worth a visit.
