When we think of Scratch Bakers, we usually think of their delicious little tarts filled with custard or their cinnamon brioche scrolls, that adorn countertops in cafes a-plenty around Auckland. However, that’s about to change, with the opening of their new ‘headquarters’ in the CBD.
Just off Victoria street, you will find the cafe with semi-industrial looking interiors and a large kitchen, where all their baking is made from scratch. They offer breakfast and lunch menus, but if you don’t have time to sit down, the cabinets are well stocked with the food they are famous for: delicious looking filled wraps and sandwiches, brioches, tarts, donuts, churros and scones. Self-control is required. They do offer healthier treats that are sans refined sugar and gluten free – including a killer coconut ‘bounty’ bar – which are great alternatives, for those with such preferences.
We visited Scratch early before work, so found road parking and getting a table easy. Keeping in mind that we are doing Junk Free June, Laura had the fluffy egg white omelette with salmon, spinach and horseradish (a high-protein, lo-carb option, which we didn’t manage to get a photo of…). Claudia and I both ordered the slow scrambled eggs with buffalo butter, shaved truffle and seeded toast. We will admit to being a bit underwhelmed by the portion size and think that this is something that could be improved. Charlotte ordered the simple combo of poached eggs on toast, opting for their gluten free paleo version, which she thought was actually pretty tasty.
Overall, we think these headquarters are a great addition to the area, being a well designed location to catchup with friends or colleagues, over coffee and something yummy to eat.
Recommend a visit!
