Eat at The Shelter is the uber stylish cafe that has recently opened up in a contemporary shared space in Ponsonby. The cafe, which flows outdoors into a courtyard, is nestled at the back of the open-planned space, alongside trendy fashion brands, stunning home-ware and other lifestyle products.
The relaxed atmosphere of the cafe was perfect for an early morning start last week. I loved the large, white bouquets of flowers dotted around the tables and that current versions of leading fashion and design magazines were available to flip through.
With a small kitchen, Eat’s menu is light and limited compared to most cafes, but it incorporates some favourite local items including Best Ugly’s bagels, the Midnight Baker’s special “Freedom Grain Loaf” and Pic’s Peanut Butter. Salads, cakes and counter options are stocked by the amazing Catroux eatery – and look divine. In fact, everything down to the water jugs and coffee cups (they serve up Eighthirty Coffee) are aesthetically pleasing.
I found the service to be friendly and attentive, and would recommend visiting if you’re looking for a chic coffee spot, ideal for meetings or catching up with friends.
Location: 78 Mackelvie Street, Ponsonby. Open Monday to Friday from 7.30am till 3.30pm and Saturday to Sunday from 8.30am till 4pm.
