If you love all things French, we have somewhere we think you’ll enjoy visiting. A while ago now, Laura and Rachel were lucky enough to attend Maison Vauron’s “Fromage Tour de France” workshop. This evening was held in their boutique French wine and cheese shop on McColl Street in Newmarket.

Maison Vauron is New Zealand’s largest specialist in the Fine wine and small domains of France, with hundreds of references in regions such as Burgundy, Bordeaux, Chateauneuf-du-Pape, Champagne, Alsace, Provence, Languedoc-Roussillon, Rhone valley, Beaujolais, Madiran, Savoie, Loire valley, Cremant, Liqueurs and French beer.

They also have New Zealand’s largest selection of French cheeses, charcuterie and delicacies, which include Terrines, Dijon Mustard, dragees, Raclette, Camembert, Roquefort, Olive oil, Rillettes, Anchovies, Saucisson, Brie de Meaux, Epoisses, and many more in store.

The “Fromage Tour de France” workshop consisted of a wonderful evening eating authentic cru French cheese accompanied by fresh baguette and French wines, from their extensive cellar. The host for the evening, store manager Amandine, taught the girls which region of France the cheeses came from, how they were made and how to describe the varying appearance, taste and aroma en fraçaise. Maison Vauron’s wide variety and high quality cheeses will appeal to the palate of those new to the realm of traditional French cheese, in addition to satisfying the greatest cheese connoisseurs.

If you love French culture, food and language, Maison Vauron is the place to visit for an authentic French experience. During the day they’re open for you to pop in to buy your wine, cheese and other groceries, or alternatively sit down for coffee alongside a flaky patisserie or filled baguette. They often have such tasting events, so it’s worth keeping an eye out for these advertised on their website.

P.S. If you’re interested in learning French, Rachel is currently taking classes outside of working hours through Alliance Francaise. After taking French at school, she’s finding it a great way to refresh her memory and continue learning the language!
