Since moving to LA, I have been spoilt for choice when it comes to new places to eat and drink. A popular café I have been to a few times now is Café Gratitude. It is a plant-based, organic chain (similar to Little Bird in Auckland) with three locations in LA, all of which I have visited on separate occasions and thoroughly enjoyed.
On our visit to the Larchmont location yesterday for lunch, it was bustling with people savouring the flavoursome meals, smoothies and raw cakes. It seemed busier than on my previous visits, which was probably because it was raining – a rare occurrence in LA!
We were advised that there would be a 20-minute wait for a seat, unless we wanted to sit on the patio and risk getting slightly wet. Being from NZ, we weren’t too phased by the chance of a few raindrops so opted for the outdoors, covered by a burnt-orange roof lined with twinkly fairy lights.
Our waitress welcomed us within seconds of being seated and made some recommendations from the menu. We both ordered the “Extraordinary” (the house BLT wrap), made with coconut bacon, shredded romaine, tomato, avocado, chipotle cashew aioli wrapped in a whole-wheat tortilla. Honestly, this wrap is absolutely delicious! I think it must be the combination of the avocado, coconut and cashew aioli that makes it so satisfying.
On a previous visit I had the “Celebrating” (two collard spring rolls filled with fresh vegetables and avocado, served with two different dipping sauces) and the “Ecstatic” (oven roasted brussel sprouts with a maple-miso glaze, which would make a lovely entrée or sharing platter).
The service was pleasant and the food arrived so quickly that when a waitress came to advise us that our food shouldn’t be too long…we had to tell her that we’d already devoured the wraps and our plates had been cleared!
For dessert, there is a delectable selection of raw cakes, chocolates, cookies and dessert shakes, including a raw version of tiramisu and the beloved American classic, Key Lime Pie. My personal favourite was the layer cake of the day, a raw carrot cake.
Café Gratitude has something for everyone, whether you’re a fan of the raw and organic food movement or not – you can’t argue with the flavours! We both left feeling satisfied and excited to come back and try something else from the extensive menu.

PS. I had an almond milk latte that was ok, but if you’re a coffee connoisseur, I’d suggest you opt for a smoothie at Gratitude and instead head to Intelligentsia for your caffeine fix.
