For a lot of people, the thought of a juice cleanse is wince inducing. Personally, I’ve always liked eating far too much, to actually believe that drinking green liquids all day is a) a good idea and b) even possible.

The first three day cleanse I did a couple of years ago, felt more like punishment than anything else. I had to hold my nose every time I slurped down the green liquid that made up the majority of my cleanse, and by the end of it, my taste buds and I decided we’d rather eat and drink nothing, than commit to something like that again.

In saying the above, I recently felt that I could do with all the positive benefits of juice cleanses that are touted by glowing and fit people in the media and that I should give a cleanse another crack – maybe my taste buds had matured or maybe juice can be good for you and tasty?

This is where Well + Good enter the picture.

Well + Good offers a variety of different online, nutritionist-designed juice cleanses. These are for the beginner to the advanced juice cleanser and can be picked up from their flagship store in City Works Depot or at The Raw Kitchen in Ponsonby and Newmarket. The juices are 100% raw and cold pressed made from pure, local produce.

I did a one-day cleanse ($65), and to get the most out of it, chose their very green option “Revitalise – a powerful cleanse designed to eliminate toxins throughout the entire body, recharge your immunity and renew your natural state of health and wellbeing”.

The cleanse consisted of 8 drinks spread throughout the day, being:

  • Black Lemonade: alkaline water, activated charcoal, lemon
  • 02: spinach, silverbeet, cucumber, celery, green apple, lemon, ginger
  • 01: spinach, kale, silverbeet, cucumber, celery, coriander, lemon
  • 04: carrot, orange, grapefruit, pineapple, lemon, ginger, turmeric
  • 01: spinach, kale, silverbeet, cucumber, celery, coriander, lemon
  • 01: spinach, kale, silverbeet, cucumber, celery, coriander, lemon
  • Mylk: almond, cashew, coconut, filtered water, date
  • Chia Water: alkaline water, lemon, cayenne pepper, chia seed

I will admit, the Black Lemonade was unusual and the cayenne in the Chia Water was intense, but the juices themselves…were surprisingly enjoyable! The green juices were easy to drink and the orange-coloured #04, with a combination of carrot, grapefruit and ginger, was super refreshing and tasty.

I didn’t have any nasty caffeine withdrawals nor was I ravenously hungry by the end of the day – the only regret I had the next morning, was that I didn’t do a longer cleanse! One day was a good start though and I can imagine that after several days on this stuff, I would feel saintly.

Having flipped my opinion of juice cleanses on its head, I would recommend Well + Good if you’re interested in giving a juice cleanse a go or if you’re looking for a change from your regular cleanse!
