Tired of your usual brunch spot? Then you need to visit Hello Friends + Allies. It’s a vibrant cafe in Epsom with plenty of character and most importantly, fantastic food. From thoughtfully crafted sensations on the menu to decadent cakes and pastries at the counter, it has it all.
Hello Friends and Allies fronts onto Great South Road near the Remuera train station. Inside, you’ll find a mixture of shared and individual seating options in a white-washed space, with floral arrangements and greenery scattered across tables and hanging from the roof. Pink is the feature colour and is picked up in pieces of art on the walls and on the menu.
When we visited, Laura had the ‘Breakfast Bruschetta’ (on wholegrain), which was stacked and slathered with a tasty French goat cheese and topped with ribbons of prosciutto, basil, vine ripened tomatoes, sticky organic honeycomb and dried fig ($19). A protein hit, I had delicious ‘Manuka Salmon & Eggs’ – a big piece of manuka house-smoked salmon with poached eggs, haloumi, baby beetroot and carrots ($21).
The coffee was Supreme and was great.
To take away, we got one of the old-fashioned doughnuts covered in sugar and stuffed with cream and jam, along with an enormous berry brioche (the icing was coloured pink with beetroot powder!). Both freshly made onsite, they tasted as good as they looked. Tip: go on an empty stomach.
The service was very helpful, friendly and attentive. We visited on a weekday when it was easy to get a seat and there was a standard wait-time on food. However, given it’s popularity, we’d suggest getting in early on weekends to avoid any delays.
