When you think of cafes in Auckland, it’s easy to gloss over the Grafton area, between New Market and the city. However, this area is definitely warming up on the quality-cafe front, which makes sense given its close proximity to both the Auckland and AUT university campuses and an abundance of workplaces nearby.
Welcome Eatery is a bit of a stalwart in the area though, so it was our pick for a breakfast stop after our morning gym session in New Market a couple of weeks back. Hidden inside the Orion Health building, it is a light and spacious setting, with a clean, modern style and plenty of seating.
On arrival, we snagged a table by the window and were quickly served by their friendly staff and had our coffee orders taken. Laura also ordered one of the Berry Smoothies with raspberries, banana, honey, chia seeds and coconut yogurt ($9).
From the breakfast menu, served from 7.30am – 11am daily, we ordered “The Cure” consisting of whiskey cured ora king salmon, fresh warm soda bread, lightly scrambled herbed eggs and smoked crème fraiche, with some lemon on the side ($19.50) and the sweet “Rice Porridge”, which was a large bowl of rolled oats cooked in coconut milk with red rice, beautiful poached nashi pear, apricot puree and cashew clusters ($17). Both meals were expertly presented and decently sized (enough to leave us full).
But…we felt like we couldn’t go past the “Cacao Toast”, so we ordered that to share for our breakfast-dessert. Pleasantly, the brioche french toast wasn’t overly sweet and instead relied on the toppings of mandarin, vanilla beetroot mascarpone, hazelnut and cacao nibs ($16.50) to give it a naturally, sugary kick.
Their menu changes more than four times throughout the year, with a new one coming soon. We’ve been told to expect something with a “s’mores” theme as a breakfast option – which definitely sounds like it will be worth testing out!
If, instead, you’re looking for something quick to takeaway for lunch, they have a variety of flavoursome salads and sandwiches in the cabinet up the front, made onsite daily, along with muffins and fresh cakes. These looked seriously good.
Great food, accommodating staff and a relaxed vibe – we’d highly recommend a visit!
