Giapo is well-known as ‘ice-cream heaven’ and as one of Auckland’s best dessert locations.  A couple of weeks ago, we were lucky enough to get a BTS tour of the luxe new parlour and ‘laboratory’ on Gore Street, which has opened after they out-grew their previous location.

For some background, Giapo is the name of the store and also the name of the store’s founder, Giapo Grazioli.  Hailing from Italy but strongly identifying with New Zealand, Giapo and his wife, Annarosa, are two faces you’ll often find behind the counter passionately describing the menu and bringing that infamous Italian ‘love for food’ (specifically ice-cream, in this case) to our corner of the globe.

If you ever get the chance to speak to Giapo in person, you will be able to appreciate how genuinely passionate and enthusiastic he is about his trade.  For him, ice-cream making is an art, a creative process, an exciting adventure and a constant challenge.  He wants to create the world’s best ice-creams – and we’d say he is well on his way towards achieving that.

The menu is something you’d find at Harry Potter’s Honeydukes, with daring and delicious flavours to try: Avocado and Macadamia, Creamy Coconut Choc Chip, Afghan Cookies, Manuka Smoked Peanut Butter and Feijoa Chamomile, to name a few.  Not only are classic dairy ice-creams available, but also vegan and gluten-free versions.

Above the shop floor is where the real magic happens though.  Conjured up from scratch and from hand-drawings and brainstorm sessions around large, marble tables, Giapo and his team create hand-decorated ice-cream cones and cups, feature ice-creams and wacky, never-been-seen-before desserts.  As you’ll see in our pictures below, the ‘Colossal Squid’ was the creation of the month when we visited.

There is indoor and outdoor seating at the new location, but if the ice-cream loving throng of people who usually crowd the store is too much for you, head to Britomart’s Takutai Square to eat in peace.

Highly recommend a visit!
