With one of the greatest reputations in Sydney, Claudia and I visited the ever popular Grounds of Alexandria. Arriving just before midday on a Sunday, we knew what to expect and weren’t surprised when we were told it was an hour wait for a table – the place was packed.
While waiting for a table, we joined the procession of people exploring the garden and being tempted by the take away food and treats on offer at the many delicious food stalls, complete with mini doughnuts! Every corner of The Grounds has something new to discover, be it the bakery and patisserie inside of the cafe or the atrium overflowing with gorgeous florals. We sipped on an old fashioned lemonade while sitting in the rustic themed Garden courtyard adorned with florals and greenery.
Once our table was ready at The Cafe, we were seated in front of the kitchen with the best view of the chefs finalising dishes and the meals coming out. Being a creature of habit, I ordered the ‘Signature Avocado’ with heirloom tomato, feta, pomegranate, za’atar on sourdough with poached eggs. Claudia had the ‘Seasonal Green Bowl’ with avocado, roasted sprouts, cauliflower, broccoli, edamame beans and green apple with roast almonds, fennel and kefir, along with some polenta chips. Admittedly, I got a bit of food envy when I saw the omelette being delivered to the patron next to me and questioned my safe choice of smashed avocado. The food was great (the polenta chips sealed the deal!) and the service was efficient and friendly without making us feel like we had to leave immediately to free up our table for the next guests.
The Grounds is always bustling with people, attracting those from Sydney and abroad due to it’s reputation, especially on sunny weekends. When visiting you must go say hi to their resident pig, Kevin B, and his other furry friends at The Grounds Farm! The newest addition to crew being Bert & Ernie, two baby goats. Along with The Cafe, you can dine at ‘The Potting Shed’ or enjoy what there is on offer from the food carts in the garden.
The Grounds of Alexandria is definitely one to add to your list of Sydney must-visits!
